NDC PROMISES TO MAKE COCOA FARMING MORE ATTRACTIVE

The National Democratic Congress Manifesto, which was launched on September 7, declared a lot of promises and packages for the Cocoa sector should they win power come 2020 in the Presidential election. 

The agricultural sector had a lot of packages listed for it. This could be attributed to the NDC boldly saying the Agricultural Sector is the bedrock of the Ghanaian economy. “The NDC Government will ensure the consistent annual increment of the cocoa price to make farming more attractive especially, to the youth.” This declaration was made in the NDC manifesto under the section given to the Agric and Agribusiness sector. Apart from increasing the price of Cocoa annually, the NDC Government listed some promises they will ensure to deliver should they win power.

On health, the NDC manifesto states that they will provide free healthcare for all Cocoa farmers. Also, Cocoa farmers will be exempted from the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS premium payment for secondary and tertiary care. The NDC has also promised to create a biometric database of all Cocoa farmers and made available at all Cocoa clinics so that at any point in time, cocoa farmers and their dependents can have access to free healthcare at various cocoa clinics. Still on health, the NDC 2020 Manifesto stated that “the next NDC Government will ensure that the COCOBOD builds well-equipped hospitals in each of the cocoa-growing regions. 

On roads, the NDC in subsection 6.11.2.2, promises to revive and broaden the scope of the Cocoa Roads project implemented under the past NDC Government. This, the NDC stated in the light of it favouring the easy transportation of the cocoa beans. 

A proper and well-maintained pension scheme was pronounced by the NDC party. Free fertilizer, additional livelihood for cocoa farmers, empowering women in cocoa farming, local manufacturing of fertilisers were also listed as part of the special packages visioned by the NDC. 

Focusing more on the youth, the NDC promises to encourage and support the youth, so as to embrace cocoa farming.
