The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) was officially launched yesterday, September 1, at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) hall.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic halted a lot of educational activities and programs in the nation. NSMQ, however which was set to take place in June/July 2020 was suspended due to the emergence of the deadly virus. The NSMQ was suspended at the regional level. The abrupt end of the regional qualifications made many people recommend and suggest strategies the organizers of this educative program could adopt in this trying time. NSMQ came into existence in 1993 in the month of April, an initiative by Dr. Mensah Bonsu.

“Unlike the previous years when all the five stages were held in Accra and all one hundred and thirty-five (135) schools camped in Accra, the preliminary stages of the NSMQ 2020 which features one hundred and eight (108) schools will be held in the regions. This decentralised format is to reduce the number of people who will come into camp in Accra” said Mrs. Ankomah Asare, the Managing Director of Prime Time Limited. Mrs. Ankomah further added that all contests will be streamed live on all social media platforms. She officially announced that Joy News will also broadcast the program, hence they are the official media partner of the NSMQ. Schools like St. Augustine's College (last year's champions and a two-times winner of the prestigious competition), Presbyterian Boys SHS, Legon, Pope John's SHS, St. Peters SHS, Achimota School, Prempeh College and many other senior high schools will be present in their respective regions to compete.

Dr. Effah Elsie Kaufman, the quiz mistress who featured from 2006 shared some comments with Joy News. In her speech, she stated that there are a lot of brilliant students especially, the engineering students who are failing to solve problems. One striking point she made was that Ghana always import solutions to problems in Ghana. She further added that students must have a change of mind in order to create new ideas and solve problems for the betterment of society.

The brain behind the NSMQ, Dr. Mensah Bonsu was present at the launch. Some other important dignitaries present were representatives from the Ministry of Education, Absa Bank and Goil Ghana.

In ensuring that the COVID-19 protocols are observed, the NSMQ team has assured the general public that the buildings and facilities, which will host the NSMQ will be disinfected, social distancing will be practised as well as the compliance of other COVID-19 safety protocols.
