Life is a mystery. It’s an entire journey of faith. A journey where certainty and uncertainty sit side by side — both settling and unsettling at the same time. 

Sometimes it feels like you’re getting exactly what you ordered, even though there’s little to no guarantee. 

You wonder if you’ll live long enough to reap what you’ve sown. You wonder if the plans you’ve made will work out. Yet, we do it anyway. We plan. We execute. We wait. That is faith.

I hear people tell those who live by faith, “Faith is unrealistic.” What they don’t see is that their entire existence is faith-based. 

Think about it. We make plans for trips and travel. How sure are you that you’ll return from that trip? 
We say, “See you tomorrow.” But is tomorrow yours to keep? 
“This is my five-year plan.” Do you know where, who, or how you will be in five years?

Solomon looked deeply at this and called it all vanity. It came from a place of hard-won understanding. When Jesus called Peter to walk on water, it was faith — faith to keep his eyes on Christ and trust that he wouldn’t fall. But when Peter noticed the turbulent waves, he panicked and began to sink.

We have been called into the great unknown. Every single day we walk out to meet mysteries unfolding right in front of us. Prepared or not, we go. Sometimes we make it through. Sometimes we don’t. 

These mysteries shape the day. Do you know if you’re stepping into a day of adversity or a day of victory? When the Bible says, “Do not be afraid of the arrows that fly by day, nor the terror of the night” — Psalm 91:5 — it’s opening your eyes to the great unknown.

So what helps the believer? Faith without borders. Eyes fixed on a higher calling. Not, “I believe in God, but let’s be realistic.” It’s complete faith. It’s saying, “This is the day the Lord has made, so I will rejoice and be glad in it.” And if adversity comes, I believe all things will work for my good, because He is with me and I am not alone.

This is a call to move past routine religious activity. Those practices aren’t wrong, but they are not the end. Seek to know Him beyond them. Don’t step into each day blind and unprepared. Look for Him in the mystery. 

Every day this week, ask yourself: Are you prepared to face the great unknown by creating your day with faith, or will you only discover it as it comes?
