*TWITTER BANS EPICURUS* *(The Cancel Culture Crave)*
Imagine the headlines ‘’Wanton Hedonists, ‘’Epicurus and friends’’, even more so imagine the number of retweets and hashtags ‘’Cancel Epicurus’’ on Athenian Twitter. Imagine the story on the *Athenian Times*, you know a parody of the *New York Times* but this time around the time is 311 BC in , of course, Athens. Then yet again, picture the half-baked news articles by *Athenian Fox News* on the alleged orgies that supposedly takes place in the as *Ho Kepos (The Garden)*. In legal terms, the Garden was an unincorporated company of Epicurus's household instructors and manuscript copyists, funded by teaching and manuscript fees as well as voluntary gifts. Think of it as a Community College…kinda.. Athenian twitter had once been rife with retweets and appraisals of how liberal and accommodating Epicurus had been with his school. You know, it allowed women, men, beer, and Cindy Crawford. It’s like a cult, but a good cult and for philosophy of course. Sighhh….
Still keep imagining……
Unlucky guy, he just had to go and propagate ideals in a community where Platonists and Aristotelians, who espoused the role of *Philosopher-king* (or at least the role of favored advisor to the king, as Aristotle was to Alexander) and were not kindly disposed towards philosophers of rival schools spreading new ideas on their turf…. typical…Athenian Twitter.
You see, it was in Athens that Epicurus’ philosophical ideals took form. It was on Athenian Twitter that his ideals spread like wild fire to the online community. (The wonders of this bird app).
Epicureanism became popular during Epicurus's time in Athens, where Epicurus's ideas formed and spread throughout Greece. He had been previously involved in several confrontations with authority that reinforced his belief that it was best to avoid politics and never participate in giving in to the prejudices of the people. Rather than winning over entire towns and nations as others had done before him, Epicurus instead sought to recruit individuals to the Epicurean culture, while working within the religious and legal systems of the greater society.
What Epicurus brought to Athens was more a way of life than a school or a community. Athenians were dismissive and hesitant about Epicurus’ hedonistic philosophy. How should one imbibe a sermon that tell you to indulge in sensual selfish pleasure as the only gratifying sense of happiness. It appears self-centred and narcist. The Greeks have always had a knack for Philosophy, some mild and others wild, like Epicurus.’ It goes without recourse to say that Epicurus was a man of many philosophies, but his hedonistic disposition would garner for him backlash and a household name in Philosophy. According to Epicurus, ‘’ the only thing that is intrinsically valuable is one's own pleasure; anything else that has value is valuable merely as a means to securing pleasure for oneself’’,this, philosophy calls *Egoistic Hednonism*.
As founders of *Participatory Democracy* ,it was absurd and unnatural for a member of Greek society to propagate philosophies that were *Individualistic* and a threat to the foundations and culture of Greek societies. While people had liberties to believe in whatever ideal they felt like, there were certain caveats. "Whatever the Philosophy, do not tamper with Greek Culture"
You see, the liberties we have today as people, is not so much in contrast with the social and political terrain of Greece and therefore Athens. Albeit the backlashes, Philosophers were free to practice their trade in other city-state if they receive opposition or backlash.
You see, you might not like *Gen Z or Millenials* for some of our inexcusable but underneath that craze for clout and inebriations lies compassion, reasoning and sound judgements, same as was in Ancient Greece. If it doesn’t sit well, then it doesn’t well, devoid of subjective inclinations. But that's where we are wrong, if indeed we are preaching for tolerance of views and opinions, then we need to respect the subject ideals of people,in so far as it doesn't involve putting another's life as stake . (For that has been the measure of our morality these days). "So long as it doesn't affect anybody negatively then I get to parade myself in that".
You see, life was simple back then, just as it is here. If you disagree with a philosopher, you get on twitter, retweet hate comments and hashtags ‘’Cancel XYZ.’’
You see, the cancel culture craze is nothing but a reinvented phenomenon. Only in this presentist perspective are we aided by Technology and hashtags. Really, you get to cancel people from the comfort of your home. 😂
*And now the condition*…..
If there’s anything that we have learnt as human beings, its that whatever it is that you do, people will always have issues or disagree with you. So, while we are not to cater for the prejudice of all as Epicurus commands, then we must warn ‘’all’’ not to meddle or meander through our prejudices. For every individual is a philosopher, and the rest us of, philosophers too, must learn to be tolerant of dissenting opinions. I don’t think I'll ever have enough data to be cancelling people out, if ever normalise the craze.
