The United Nations has warned that more than 100 million “extremely poor” individuals across the Africa continent are at risk as a result of accelerating climate change that could likewise soften away the continent’s couple of glacial masses within two decades.

The report which was released on Tuesday by the World Meteorological Organization (WBO) to the United Nations further stated that the continent is warming more and at a faster rate than the global average. The WBO identified the extremely poor as people who live on less than $1.90 per day.  The General Secretary of WBO, Petteri Taalas mentioned that last year temperatures continue to rise across Africa with “accelerating sea level rise” as well as extreme weather conditions such as landslides, drought and floods which are all indicators of climate change.

The Commissioner for rural economy and agriculture at the African Union Commission, H.E Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko said “By 2030, it is estimated that up to 118 million “extremely poor” people will be exposed to drought, floods and extreme heat in Africa, if adequate response measures are not put in place.” In addition to the effects posed by the change in climate to Africa, she further added that “In sub-Saharan Africa, climate change could further lower gross domestic product by up to 3 per cent by 2050.”
